At GSV Inspect, our established team of experts drives our leadership in liquid cargo surveying and STS supervision. In this series, we chat with our professionals about their journeys, showcasing the growth opportunities and proven expertise that make us the trusted partner in the petrochemical industry. Today, we sit down with Thijs de Jonge, who started as a school leaver of the Maritime Academy and rose to Full Attendance Surveyor and Superintendent in just four years. His story highlights the career advancement available within our stable, experienced organization.

Q: Thijs, what do you do at GSV Inspect, and how do you ensure our inspections are top-notch?

A: My role has grown from Junior Surveyor to Superintendent. I handle everything for clients from A to Z, guiding the process so they have zero worries.

Q: Why did you choose GSV Inspect, and what makes it such an exciting place to work?

A: I joined as a school leaver by chance, working with Jan. It seemed odd at first, but I've advanced on my merit, gaining complete independence over jobs for my clients.

Q: What sets working at GSV Inspect apart from other companies in the industry?

A: Two standout factors: the huge variety of locations and clients, which boosts your knowledge fast if you have potential, and the responsibility you earn after proving reliability as an independent player.

Q: Can you share an exciting moment when you tackled a challenging job?

A: The first time I handled the Thialf for Heerema on a bunker operation was impressive. There were great dynamics between the ship, supplier, and client. It was a defining, honorable task.

Q: How does GSV Inspect help you grow in your career?

A: Through guidance, then independence, I've learned from mistakes and variety in tasks, growing from sampler to Superintendent in four years.

Q: What key skills are essential in your role, and how do you improve them here?

A: Keeping a cool head amid chaos, staying friendly and professional, plus building knowledge on products and systems. GSV supports this with hands-on experience.

Q: How does GSV Inspect ensure safety and compliance?

A: We maintain certified equipment and take safety training. Ultimately, personal responsibility ensures we get home safely.

Q: What changes are happening in the petrochemical world, and how is GSV responding?

A: Shifts like open-to-closed sampling - driven by environmental and safety regulations which can make our job more challenging due to added equipment but besides being mandatory we fully support it, and adapt to these procedures.

Q: What would you say to an experienced inspector considering GSV?

A: Our work variety is unmatched and growing, and we offer flexible approaches. Be ready for long days, which are compensated by time off or overtime.

Q: What don't most people know about you, and how does it help your work?

A: My mind never stops—I run scenarios to prevent issues. It drives me crazy sometimes, but fuels my love for new challenges.

Thijs's experience underscores GSV Inspect's commitment to growth within our proven framework. If you're an experienced surveyor seeking stability and advancement, join our team. For clients, we're your reliable partner in compliant, expert services.
